Announced at WWDC on June 8, 2026 and polished through a summer of betas, iOS 27 went public on September 14, 2026. Apple skipped a dramatic visual overhaul this cycle and spent its energy on two things instead: making Siri genuinely useful, and sanding down daily annoyances.
Siri AI: The Headline Act
Siri has been re-architected around generative models — Apple's own foundation models plus, notably, Google Gemini under the hood — into a dedicated "Siri AI" mode. It handles follow-up questions, understands what's on your screen, digs specifics out of your email, and completes multi-step tasks inside apps. A system-wide search bar now lets you route a question to Siri or ChatGPT. The visual identity changed too: a refreshed icon and a fluid glow around the Dynamic Island replace the old pulsing orb.
Two caveats: the full Siri AI beta rolls out in English through late 2026, and it's absent at launch in the EU and China while Apple clears local regulators.
The Wallpaper That Fits Any Screen
The sleeper hit is wallpaper extension: pick one photo and Apple Intelligence stretches it intelligently beyond its original borders to fill the Lock Screen on any device — no more awkward crops. In Apple's demo a single photo adapted cleanly across five different iPhones. Small feature, hard to go back from.
Spatial Reframing and Everything Else
- Spatial Reframing: generative photo edits that can shift perspective and even where someone appears to be looking — with provenance labels.
- Parental controls: expanded screen-time tools and app-permission requests aimed at families.
- Shared Albums in Photos finally accept contributions from Android and Windows users.
- Safari groups tabs by topic and watches pages for changes.
- Under the hood: a reworked CPU scheduler measurably speeds up app launches on older phones, plus better Wi-Fi-to-cellular handoffs.
Will Your iPhone Run It?
iOS 27 supports every iPhone 11 and newer (plus the second-gen iPhone SE), and comes preinstalled on the iPhone 18 lineup and iPhone Duo. The catch is feature splits: Apple Intelligence and the new Siri need an A17 Pro or newer, and custom Siri voices demand the A19 Pro chip (iPhone Air and iPhone 17 Pro and up). Everyone else still gets the performance, Safari, Photos and Health improvements. Standard advice applies: back up before updating.
